"Gardanne" by Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was one of the greatest French painters of Post-Impressionism. He was known as the "Master of Aix" because of how he portrayed the beauty of nature in Aix-en-Provence. This is the horizontal view of the village of Gardanne (ca. 1885), a hill town near Aix-en-Provence. The steeple of the local church crowns the cluster of red-roofed buildings which animate the sloping terrain. Faceted and geometric, the structures anticipate early-twentieth-century Cubism.
